    CONCAVE DEFINITION - Fingerboard variations

Post by rootsbloodyroots on Tue Nov 23, 2010 7:58 am

Guys, if you all can observe, fingerboards have different height, weight and depth. Dont buy FB just because you like the graphics. Please consider its form and profundity. I’ve been comparing my fingerboards and they have different depth. Here are some helpful tips on buying fingerboard, these observation are from actual skateboard but pretty much substantial for fingerboards.

STEEP CONCAVE HELL CONCAVE![/b] (Not quite but close to it). This is the concave for the kid that has to have the deck with ‘POP!’(I hate the word ‘POP’, too.). Steep nose and tail with a deep center concave. Abrupt transitions abound, these help to stiffen the deck and give it a quick snap. Nose and tail flip starts quickly after the outer truck holes exaggerating the steepness. The kids love’em, top choice for most of the under 20 year old skateboarders.

MEDIUM CONCAVE* This is a very traditional concave. Medium center concave with slight ‘wings’ over the inner truck hole stress points. Medium nose and tail angle with a quick transition after the truck holes. A simple easy to get used to concave, jump on it and you’re instantly ready to skate.

MELLOW CONCAVE*Usually this is the choice for the tech skater but some Old guys that like flatter decks also appreciate this mold. Flat spots beyond the outer truck holes provide a stable platform for nose and tail slides. Smooth transitions through the nose, tail, and center concave provide a stable platform that is not too ‘Twitchy’ for flip tricks.

The Techdeck competition series is a Mellow Concave Fingerboard and it is very technical in nature(one of my favourite). Techdeck wood is Medium Concave. It is also a replicated 7.5” real skateboard so if you don’t have it yet, better grab one cause techdeck is not releasing wooden fingerboard consecutively. There are few stocks available but there will be no more.

Some new released techdecks are Steep Concave. I have a new FB(black world industries) which is very steep compared to some of my World industries FB. New released decks have decent Concave and symmetrical balance.

It takes me about an hour just to buy one techdeck because of my keen observation and detailed scrutiny when buying one. Hope this can help you guys choose better decks when buying and enjoy playing.
